Tell us a bit more about you.
Assalamualaikum. I am Fara, 35 yrs old. Mother of two beautiful boys, aged 3 and 1.
Tell us more about your business, and who are your target audience?
I started my baking business way back in April 2013. It all started out on that very fine day, while watching TV in the living room with my family, the idea of creating a Company on Facebook Business Page surfaces so that i can “officially” take in orders myself for my bakes and also to share with more people on what i have to offer. I decided to do Facebook because it is convenient, and that is the only FREE platform i can afford to have at that moment. Before this, I only bake small for my family, relatives and close friends to eat during birthday and Eid celebrations. It was through word of mouth that my bakes were known to more relatives and then friends of friends. The limelight was my fluffy soft, with super generous amount of Nutella Tapak Kuda everyone was eager to sink their teeth in. There i took my first picture of my cake for my Facebook profile picture using my mobile phone’s camera. My business name ” The Oven Lady ” was also input by my siblings and mom. We actually had so much fun and laughter while brainstorming for a name. And my company’s Logo is designed by my lil sister Syah Andrini and brother in law, Khalid Noor themselves. Everything I have achieved is a joint contribution from my supportive family members.
We target, man and woman of all ages young and old. As we offer varieties of bakes in our menu, there is definitely something for everyone here.
What inspire you to bake and start a baking business?
The love and joy I find in baking, the satisfaction each time i get when i see the joy on people’s face after having a bite of my bake are one of the few reasons that inspired me to bake more. The people who inspired me to start a baking business is my mother, Aishah Salleh and my late grandmother Rayah aka Nek Yut. My grandmother used to sell our Malay traditional Kuih at the old Bedok Interchange. She sells kuih like Koleh Koleh and Jemput Jemput Bom. And my mom herself would take in orders for her famous Pineapple Tarts. From a very young age, I have already been exposed to baking and the enthusiasm of being an entrepreneur myself.
What are some of the struggles you face while running a baking business?
As a homebaker, time management is one of my struggles at the moment, especially after the birth of my two boys. Currently home schooling and taking care of them 24/7. I can only bake when when they’re are sleeping and only when they’re both well and healthy. It’s impossible to bake when nursing sick babies. Also for the past one year, i have been getting myself involved in bake sale corporate events which usually falls on a week day. I can only commit if my partner can be available to help me babysit the boys while i go mend my bake sale booth for the day. Right now, I cannot commit myself to baking full time, my babies are my priority right now. I am thankful to be able to bake from home. Alhamdulillah.
What are some negative things people say about your business, and how did you overcome that?
There will always be naysayers among family and friends. Throughout the years in business, I have learned to not let the negativity affect me as an individual.
What are your baking speciality?
My specialty would be baking cakes, desserts and pastries. I truly enjoy creating memories on dessert tables for wedding events, birthday functions, bachelorette parties, etc. I also enjoy baking cookies for festive seasons like Chinese New Year and Hari Raya. My bestsellers has always been my Onde Onde Tarts, Pineapple Tart Balls, Nutella Tarts and my addictive Hershey Cornfakes Meringue.
What is your advice to other bakers out there when starting their own business?
I think it’s really important that you truly enjoy what you do. You need to feel excitement just thinking of your business. The most important advise as a Muslim businesswoman myself, believe in Allah that He will only do what is best for you and it is His choice to give you success or failure. Have faith, InshaAllah He will opened up the right opportunity for you.
